The sound of the hospital was still going on around him but it was a lot dimmer especially when a nurse had come in to tell him that his mother was in the hospital.
Kara Hawkins had been found by her husband on the floor and now they were bringing her in to the hospital and Matt was working and of course they would let him know that his mother was coming in especially when he was a third year Resident.
And this was his mother.
He waited by the doors when the EMT's brought her in and he looked up to see his father was coming to and the EMT's started to read off the stats and what they had given her on the way to the hospital but his mother was awake and there was one word that kept coming from her mouth. Amanda.
His father took Matt to one side and said "She's been saying that name all the way to the hospital" Matt moved his brown eyes up to look at his father and nodded. "The doctors are going to be keeping an eye on her" he couldn't help them out due to the fact Kara was his mother so he took his father to the relatives room.
"Mrs Hawkins, do you remember me? It's Doctor Pravesh"
Kara smiled at him "Of course I do but I need to see Amanda"
"Do you mean Matt?"
Kara shook her blonde haired head "No, Matt is my son.. I need to see Amanda my daughter.. my eldest daughter" Devon looked up at the others and then nodded "Well get you sorted out first and then see if we can find your daughter" he smiled at her once more.
Devon looked up at the others, either Kara had hit her head and thought she had a daughter along with Matt, even though she did once because Matt had had a twin who had died when he was young, or he had an older sister that he didn't know anything about.
He went to the relatives room after a while to say that they were going to admit Kara just for over night obs to keep an eye on her and take some more tests.
"Your mother seems a little confused because she keeps asking to see someone called Amanda as you know but when I asked her if she meant you.. she said no that she had an older daughter and I don't know if you want to ask her about it a bit more but here is her stuff that was on the bed with her" Devon handed the stuff over to Matt "We will take good care of her as you know, take some time" he clapped Matt on the arm and then left the two of them alone.
"Do you know anyone called Amanda, dad?" Matt asked after he got them both a coffee and sat down next to his father.
"Name doesn't sound familiar" he admitted before taking the coffee cup from his son and then took a sip not caring if it's hot or not he needs it right now.
Matt nodded once and then dropped his eyes down to his mom's purse and chewed on his lip for a moment before he put the coffee cup down on the table that was sitting next to him before he then decided to look through her purse to see if this Amanda was a nurse or something or anyone else to make her think that she was her daughter.
It was during Matt's search that he came to an inside pocket and he unzipped it and in there was a picture, he pulled it out and in the picture was a woman holding the hand of a little blonde girl and he swallowed hard before turning the picture over and on the back it said Amanda and I, 1988 .
Matt had a sister that he didn't know about, a sister that his mother kept a secret until now and he didn't know how he felt about that.
He slipped the picture in to his pocket and zipped her purse back up, his father had been watching the TV that was on and his attention wasn't on his son.
It was a little later when Devon came to get Matt and his father that they found her in her own room and looking out the window. He let his father have a moment with Kara before his dad went home and Matt sat down in a chair next to his mother's bed. He reached in to his pocket and pulled out the picture and handed it over to his mother.
"Do I have a sister?" he asked and let his brown eyes settle on the woman in the bed.
Kara looked down at the picture and smiled slightly. "Amanda, my baby girl" she said and looked over at Matt "I wanted to tell you so many times"
"Why didn't you, mom?" he asked and watched her. "Surely I had the right to know that I have an older sister out there that doesn't even know I exist"
"Because after we lost Annie I saw how devastated you were that your twin had died and you were lost, telling you that you had another sister that you didn't know about would only hurt you more and I knew that you would hate me so I stayed quiet"
Annie had been his twin sister and when they were ten she had got really sick and unfortunately she passed away leaving him as an only child or at least that's what he thought at the time. Living without Annie had been tough and when he reached his teens he wanted to be with his sister and had thought about killing himself because it would be so much easier but he couldn't do that to his family when they had already lost a daughter and when he was 14 he saw a woman help someone when they were in a crash and he knew right there and then that he wanted to go in to medicine.
He wanted to be a doctor and went in to the Marines and done two tours of Afghanistan and then came back and took up Residency here.
Matt took a deep breath before clearing his throat softly "Do you know where she would be?"
"The last time I heard she was in the Hamptons"
Matt raised a dark eyebrow at his mother because his sister had been living in the Hamptons and that was impressive in all of itself. "I'm not going to promise anything but I'll see what I can do, you get some rest" he stood up and put his hand on her shoulder before he kissed her head and then walked out the room.
Matt checked up on her when his shift ended and she was fast asleep but he knew that she was in good hands so he headed home.
He was greeted by his girlfriend Carleigh when he got home and he gave her a long kiss before the door was even shut but he didn't care because he needed it right now.
"Hows your mom?" Carleigh got him a drink and sat down on the couch with him, her hand pushing his hair back a little bit.
"I have a sister that I didn't know about" Matt finally came clean and looked over at his beautiful dark haired girlfriend.
"Wow.. what are you going to do with that information? Are you going to find her?"
Matt had been thinking about that on the drive back, even though he really should've been concentrating on the road but it seemed like his mind would wander off without meaning to. He had already lost his sister when they were ten and to now find out that there was another one out there that probably had her own family, her own siblings... he wasn't sure what he wanted to do with that until now. "I'm going to go and find her.. I want to know who this Amanda is"
Carleigh kissed his cheek gently and leaned her head in to her hand with her elbow on the back of the couch "I'm proud of you babe, you could've turned against this but you're looking straight on and I hope that with everything it'll be okay"
"Me too" he admitted with a bob of his head before he took a drink of his coffee and after putting the cup on the coffee table he leaned his head back against the couch too and tried to settle in to the movie but his mind was wandering to what this Amanda would be like.
It was a couple of days later when he actually had a day off which he would've liked to have spent in bed with his beautiful girlfriend but he was in the Hamptons. His mother had been released from hospital which he was glad about but there was always this worry that she would be devastated if he couldn't find Amanda.
He found out that her name was Amanda Clarke and now here he was standing outside the beach house that his half sister lived in and he wasn't sure just how this was going to go. He felt his phone vibrate in the pocket of his jeans and he pulled his cell out and there was Carleigh wishing him luck. With that in mind he put his cell back in to his pocket and then walked up the stairs and knocked on the door.
Matt waited for a moment but no one answered the door and he sighed, he heard a voice behind him asking him if he needed help. He looked down at the owner of the voice and it was a blonde haired man who looked as if he had come from a party and knowing that this place was for the rich then it's possible that he did. "Yeah, I'm looking for Amanda Clarke, do you know if she's around?"
Nolan studied the man for a moment and then cleared his throat "She doesn't live here anymore, moved away a few years ago" he nodded once.
"Oh, this was the last address that I have for her; I have to find her it's important"
"Is this about her mother?" Nolan asked and pushed his hands into the pockets of his pants.
"It is" Matt admitted with a bob of his head.
Nolan nodded to before he looked away towards the ocean "I don't think Amanda wants to know about her mother"
"Why would she not want to know?"
"It's complicated and best not to rock the boat" he looked back up at the dirty blonde haired man. "I'll let her know that you came by but can't say anything other than that"
Matt was confused on what was going on here and ask he started to walk down the steps and came to three steps away from the bottom he then realised what the other man had said "You're in contact with her? I have to speak to her, it really is important"
"Who are you?"
"I'm her half brother, Matt"
Nolan's mouth fell open at that because the last thing Emily needed to know was that she had another sibling, a sibling like Charlotte that she didn't even know about. He knew that Emily was probably going to kill him for doing this but if this man needed to find her then who was he to stand in the way of siblings reuniting even if he was going to give her a heads up that someone was coming her way. "She lives in DC now, I'll get you the address and then you can speak to her yourself"
"Thank you, this means a lot" he smiled at the other man.
It was a week later that Matt was sitting at a table with two cups of coffee in DC and waiting for Amanda to turn up, he kept checking his watch and knew that this was killing him because of the fact that he never thought that he would have more family than what he already has and now he's going to be meeting a woman that he didn't even know about.
She was late.
Emily however was sitting in her car outside of the coffee shop and wondering what she should be doing.
She remembers the knock at the door that she had gotten a few days before. Emily spent most of her time at Caesar's and only one person really knew about that, Nolan, so she knew that the visitor must've come across her best friend but at the same time she had got a call from him saying that she was going to be getting a visitor. He didn't go in to too much details but he did say for her to be careful.
The knock at the door came a couple days later and more than anything she had hoped it would've been Chelsea downstairs but she knew that the young girl had a key and would let herself in plus she knew that Emily was home anyway.
She opened the door with apprehensive and when she saw him on the other side she saw that he looked like her, the blonde hair, the brown eyes and for a moment she wasn't sure what she should do or even say. Emily let him in and then shut the door behind him. The three dogs weren't sure about him and honestly she didn't blame them.
"How did you know about me?" she had asked after getting him a coffee, they sat away from each other. Emily looked down at the coffee in her hand and chewed on her lip.
"From mom" he admitted, watching her.
"You mean your mom, not mine" Emily looked up at him and shook her head, her blonde ponytail moving with her movement.
"She's our mother, Amanda"
Emily looked down and closed her eyes at that name, sure she had it on her SHIELD ID but no one actually called her Amanda, they would call her Emily or in some cases Clarke but never Amanda and she didn't even go by that name anymore. There had only been one person who had called her that once and they were gone.
She opened her eyes up and looked at him again and repeated "Your mother" and with that she stood up "You can go now"
"Wow you are so twisted, what mom left you and now you're running scared because she wants to see you" he stood up, he was the same height as her.
Emily scoffed at him "Kara never told you what happened did she, figures, so when you do find out the truth then you'll understand why I don't want anything to do with her and please just go, my boyfriend will be home soon and I don't really fancy explaining to him who you are" Caesar was on another mission but he didn't need to know that.
Matt held his hands up "Okay fine, I'll go and leave you to it"
He did leave and shut the door behind him.
Now Emily was wondering why the hell she had called him because if it was her then she would've been on the first flight out of DC but he had still been there and she was now sitting in her car. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door and getting out, locking the car behind her once she had shut the door and walked in to the coffee shop.
She sat down at the table and smiled her thanks at the coffee. In all honesty Emily was missing work for this and actually didn't have long especially with her team doing back to back missions.
"Didn't think you would call"
"Didn't think you would stay around guess we're both full of surprises" she said and looked down at the cup. "Why did you come looking for me? I mean, I've been a secret all these years and now what, you want to see me?"
"Mom-Kara- was brought in to the hospital that I work at and she was calling your name, she really wants to see you, Amanda"
Emily wasn't sure if she wanted to see her, she had left her when she was pretty young only a few years ago did she find out that her mom had been so sick that she had tried to kill her and while she did praise her for getting the help that she clearly got, she didn't like the fact that her mother had continued to stay away from her in the process and had another family. She went to speak but her cell was going off and she reached into her jacket pocket and pulled it out before looking down and sighing. "I have to get to work" she admitted before looking up at him and put her cell back away.
"Do you work for the government or something?" he said and kept his brown eyes on her.
"Or something" she admitted and then drank down some of her coffee before putting the cup down on the table. "I'm going to be busy for a while so it's probably best if you go back to New York"
"At least think about it, at least think about seeing her because she really wants to see you"
"I will, I will think about it" Emily admitted and gave him a slight smile before walking out and going back to her car; aware that Matt was watching her in the process, before getting in the car she held her hand up in a wave and so did he and with her getting in the car and driving away she felt like she could finally breathe.
Kara Hawkins had been found by her husband on the floor and now they were bringing her in to the hospital and Matt was working and of course they would let him know that his mother was coming in especially when he was a third year Resident.
And this was his mother.
