For as long as anyone can remember it's been Charles and Molly. Molly and Charles. There was never really anyone else. Sure they had friends of their own sex like Charles had Elvis and a few other guys and then Molly had Sarah and the other girls but for each other they were all they really had.
When Charles' nan die it was Molly who was there.
When Steve left Molly alone at prom and went off with another girl it had been Charles who had comforted her.
Charles had gone travelling for a little bit and had surprised Molly when he returned.
When Rebecca left baby Sam in the care of Charles it had been Molly who would take shifts with him so that he could get some sleep even though she had to be up early.
They had even flat shared but everytime he saw her with a new bloke it would hurt him because he, Charles James, was in love with her and he couldn't even tell her out of fear that it would ruin their friendship. So he watched her and he just continued to bring Sam up. Now he had a house and Molly spent most of her time in his spare bedroom than she did in her own flat.
Sam was at school which allowed Charles to have some time with Elvis and they were sat in the local cafe having a drink.
"I take it you still haven't told her then?" Elvis asked after a moment, he had seen it from the beginning of his and Charlie's friendship that he had been in love with Molly but the bloody idiot won't tell the girl what he's feeling so he had to sit and watch her be happy with someone else.
"If I tell her and she doesn't feel the same then that's our friendship ruined and Sam loves her and I can't do that to my son. His mother ditched him when he was a baby and I can't take Molly out of his life too"
"And if you do tell her and she does feel the same then you have everything don't you?" Elvis asked with a raised eyebrow. "I mean come on Charlie you live together for Christ sake you have a family unit so what is it going to take for you to actually tell her?"
"For her to actually look at me the same way she does any other guy" he responded and then sat back in his chair and taking a drink of his tea. "So a bloody miracle" Charles said after he took a drink and put the cup down on the table.
"Stranger things have happened" Elvis shrugged up a shoulder before glancing out the window. "Oh, I forgot to tell you that Bones is back in the UK and he wants us all to meet up for a drink" he looked back at Charlie for that and leaned his arms on the table. "Do you think you can get away?"
"Hasn't he been out of the UK for a few years?" Charles asked. He sort of remembered when Bones had left about three years ago to go across the world and if he was honest he thought he had already come back but he guessed not especially when Elvis was actually telling him about it now. "I should be able to get away for a couple hours and that is it"
"Good because you could do with a night out, get away from Molly for a while and then you might actually be able to think a little bit straighter"
"And this is coming from the guy that told me to tell her..."
"Well if you're not going to tell her then you might as well have some fun with a girl that will love you for the night"
"Well isn't that a cheery thought" Charles rolled his eyes a little. "Plus I can't exactly have a lot of fun, I have Sam"
Elvis rolled his eyes this time and then grabbed his own tea and took a drink of it.
They sat and chatted for a little bit longer and then they went their own ways, Elvis telling Charles that he would text him about getting together with Bones and what time it would be. Charles was actually dreading it if he was honest.
When he got back home he actually found a note from Molly telling him that she had to pop out but his mother had rang. He wasn't sure how he felt about that news especially when he would get his mother telling him to find a wife and a proper mother for Sam. His mother liked Molly and knew of the love that he felt for her but she also told him that it was best just to move on because it didn't look like Molly felt the same way.
He often wondered whether or not that was true but he didn't get around to telling her in case it ruined their friendship.
Charles would ring his mother later.
He got a text from Elvis and the time was set for 7pm. Charles wasn't really looking forward to it at all.
Later that night Molly was sat on the sofa with Sam helping him to read and he watched them and thought back to what Elvis had said earlier; they were a family unit so why didn't they make it official? But of course he knew that it was down to the fact that Charles didn't know what Molly felt. He wasn't sure he would ever tell her.
"Are you sure you're going to be alright?" Charles asked them for the seventh time in only a few short minutes.
Molly sighed, she was sure that he fussed more than any woman that she even knew "Yes, we're going to be fine, we have some reading to do and then Sam is going to bed which leaves me in front of the TV watching it" she smiles. It wasn't going to be that bad, she would chill out, make herself some food and then probably go to bed before he even got back. Simple as that.
Charles nodded "Don't stay up too late and be good" he kissed Sam's head before he mouthed thank you to Molly before he grabbed his keys and wallet and walked out of the front door.
Molly looked in the direction of the door and chewed on her lip for a moment, before she looked back down at Sam and smiled then went back to reading. Like she said it was going to be a somewhat quiet night as long as Charlie didn't come back drunk. It wasn't like him to do so but when he got with the guys.. then it could be a messy one.
"She was a beauty with deep brown eyes and blonde hair right..." Bones was trying to tell Charles of the girl he had met while he had been travelling; it doesn't surprise him especially when Bones was the type to go after women like that.
"I wouldn't speak about women to Charlie, he's still in love with the girl he met when he was younger and hasn't told her yet, have you Charlie?" Elvis grinned over at Charles before taking a drink of his beer.
"Jesus James" Bones put his drink down and looked over at him. He liked to call Charles by his last name because Bones had always said that he had a double name and whenever they had been together it had always been James never Charles or Charlie for that matter and he really hasn't forgiven Molly for calling him Charlie and now Elvis does too.
"Are you ever going to tell her?" Bones asked.
"Haven't decided" Charles admitted before shrugging up a shoulder. It was true, he hadn't decided whether he was going to tell Molly how he felt but everyone was urging him to do something and what that something was he wasn't sure because there were so many opinions.
Everyone seemed to be having an opinion these days.
The night carried on and the guys actually spoke about other things and what Bones had missed while he had been travelling and a few other things from Bones himself about what they had missed. Charles had seen other countries, he had travelled and now he was back to settle down into his life.
The night ended up with Bones sleeping on Charles' couch while Elvis had gone home. It was really going to be fun in the morning especially when Sam and Molly came downstairs. For a while Charles was sat drinking a cuppa before he had decided to go upstairs and while Bones was snoring his head off on the couch Charles was looking at the pictures that was on the walls of the front room.
Rebecca hadn't wanted to be part of Sam's life so it had been up to Charles to bring him up and Molly was always there too. He couldn't help but wonder just why Rebecca had decided to leave the small boy on his doorstep because there hadn't been no explanation other than a quick note that told them that he was Charles' and to take good care of him.
Other friends would've given up on him the second that Sam came into his life but not Molly and he guessed that was down to the fact she was the oldest of her siblings and she knew what to do to bring up a baby.
He wasn't sure what to do anymore especially when it came to Molly; maybe his mother was right, maybe it was time to move on and find someone else.
Charles smirked slightly when Bones let out another snore before he washed his cup up in the sink and he went upstairs to bed, he checked up on Sam first and smiled to himself as he kissed the boys hair and made sure that he was warm enough. Charles headed to bed.
He was tired of trying to hide everything so maybe now was the time to actually put his feelings for Molly aside because it had been so long.
Charles ran his hands over his face before he got out of his clothes and into the bed. Maybe he should get Elvis to set him up on a few dates just to see how it goes.
It might be fun...or it could very well be hell but either way he had to do something.
He fell asleep thinking of that.
