The day she found out that Jon wasn't her real father
She moved down the hall of the castle and couldn't help but stop near the office. Mia could hear the voices coming from in there and sometimes she liked to sit and listen to find out just what was going on. Today there was two raised voices and one calm one. It seemed like her father had everything under control just like he usually did. Her mother however sounded like she wanted to kill the person whose other voice was raised.
Amelia was still pretty young but she knew that her mother and father were King and Queen in the north, that she was a princess and would one day take up the Northern throne. Her aunt Sansa was Queen down in the south and really that's what kept the two parts in peace. Katherine would often write to Sansa and so would Mia but she would write different things to Sansa.
Sometimes Katherine would write to Rohan too, the two countries had been friends for as long as Mia could remember and she had her own friends from there. Often she would end up in their castle, Durinhall was beautiful and it honestly made Winterfell look and feel very dreary especially with the Winter that was still taking hold of the country.
But Winterfell was her home and would be her home for a very long time. She would raise her own family here, she would teach them how to read and write here, how to be a prince and princess here. This was the home of the Starks and would be for a very long time. Sometimes she would listen to stories of someone called Robb Stark, the previous King in the North who apparently had been a great man. His sword hung on the wall. Sometimes she would catch her mother looking at it. Sometimes she would see the sadness in her eyes but she never knew why.
Mia was pushed out of her thoughts when she heard a voice call from inside the office. "Lord Adderley-" she heard her mother's voice who seemed very close to screaming the place down. She was sure that Katherine would do that.
The door to the office opened and Mia stood up straight and watched as the Lord, who was still pretty young but definitely older than her walk passed her. He gave her a glance before stopping. "I don't know what your mother sees in that man, he is a bastard and you should be ashamed calling him your father. I don't know what your real father would say to all of this but Robb should be the one here"
"Adderley that is enough!" Katherine said angrily and she watched as his nostrals flared and he moved off down the hallway and away from the office. She kept her eyes on the man before she looked at Mia who had anger in her own eyes. "Mia.." she said and took a step towards her.
Mia looked at her mother with disgust and then moved away from the office and didn't even turn around when Katherine called her full name. For as long as she could remember Jon had been her father, seven hells she though he was her father but clearly she had been wrong especially when Robb Stark had been the man. She didn't understand why she wasn't told. Was Katherine ashamed to tell her? Or was it something else? Mia wasn't sure other than the fact that she wanted to be away from the office and her mother.
-.-
Katherine went looking for Mia and when she finally found her she felt so much relief as she had been worried when she couldn't find her. "Mia.." she said and then sat down on the cold floor with her daughter. The much younger girl was nine years old and already giving her enough Stark attitude and while Katherine had wanted to tell her about Robb being her father it seemed to get harder each time that wanted to tell her.
"Leave me alone" she muttered and looked away from her mother.
There was silence between the two of them for a while before Mia finally spoke to her. "Why did you not tell me? Why did you not say that my father was Robb Stark?"
"I wanted to tell you, believe me, I did but every time I tried to tell you you were so young and I wanted to spare you the details of just how he died and I know that I should've told you but I never wanted you to find out this way. We love you Mia, both me and Jon do, he loves you as if you are his own"
Mia shook her head "Go away mother, I don't want to hear any more" she got up this time and left her mother sitting there on her own.
Katherine sighed and then shook her head. She knew she should've told her but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She sat there for a moment and then headed in the direction of the office where Jon was.
"How did it go?" he asked and watched as Katherine took a seat but he could see the sadness in her eyes. Clearly not that well then. "Kat.." he said and then leaned over before taking her hand with his "We knew this was going to happen, we knew that we should've told her sooner and I understand why you didn't but surely anything is better than this, her hating you"
Katherine held on to his hand and brought her brown eyes up to look at him. "My love it's not me I'm worried about her hating, it's you. The man who brought her up and loved her like she is yours" she said softly and then put their hands up to her lips before she kissed his. Her lips stayed against his hand for a moment before she slowly moved their hands down to her lap and kept them together.
For a week Amelia didn't speak to her mother and Jon. For a week she avoided them and would eat her meals at different times or even in her room. She wouldn't look at them and would often spend time looking up at the sword that hung on the wall.
For a week she hated them both, hated all three of them. Jon for being her father, Katherine for not telling her and Robb for dying.
-.-
For a week Katherine let Mia boil, let her get the anger out of the way and the hatred and then finally one night she decided that enough was enough. That she had to speak to Mia and put the young girl straight. For her to see their side of the story rather than go on what Lord Adderley had said.
Katherine knocked on the door and rather than waiting to be invited in she pushed the door open and Mia was sat on the bed with her head in a book. Her dark hair was falling around the young girl's face and she has this image of what she would look like when she's older and there is the Stark fire about her and she just hopes that Mia will forgive her for the wrong that she thinks Katherine has done to her.
"I'm busy" she said without looking up but she knew very well that it's her mother even without looking up. There is just something about Katherine that seems to radiate from her in a room and Mia could feel it right now.
Katherine moved over to where she was sitting on the bed, after shutting the door behind her to let Mia know that she's not going to leave the room. That they were finally going to talk through all of this and whether or not Mia believed her was really up to the young girl. "Shut the book, Amelia, now" she said and raised an eyebrow at the young girl. Katherine has never raised a hand to her and never would.
Mia heard the tone in her mother's voice and then shut the book up and putting it on the cupboard beside her bed before she moved and sat with her back against the headboard. For the last week she hasn't even seen her mother, hasn't sat in a room with her or hasn't eaten any food with her or Jon. So now they were sitting in this room and honestly it was a little bit strange to think about what was going to happen. "What do you want, Mother?" she asked and looked a little bit tired as if she just wanted to be left alone but at the same time was tired of fighting with her mother.
"What Lord Adderley said was the truth, Robb is your father or at least his blood runs through your veins but Jon is your father, he's the one who brought you up" she said and watched Mia who looked down. "I married Robb after I left Kings Landing and headed North, it wasn't something that I had wanted when I first went looking for him,I just wanted safety" she admitted and chewed on her lip.
Mia was quiet but she was still listening whether or not she wanted too. Katherine had a way with words and right now she was making sure that her daughter was listening. "But we fell in love and soon got married" she said and looked up at Mia. The dark haired young girl was looking at her and for that Katherine was thankful. Even after all of these years Robb was still very hard to talk about.
"I found out I was pregnant after a while of marriage and-" Mia interrupted her and said
"Did he want me?"
"More than anything, when he found out he was so happy and I have never seen him with such a big smile but everything changed when he was invited to a wedding. Your father wanted me to go with him but I said that it wasn't the best idea especially when Robb had been engaged before to the girl whose wedding he was going to so we separated and went in two different directions and he promised to meet up with us after the wedding but I got a note from the Lord and your father had been killed" she said and looked down and was going to spare the details of just how he had died.
"I ended up at the Wall where you were born as you know and Jon was there but he was a man of the Night's Watch and had his vows." She chewed on her lip for a moment and watched Mia once more. Katherine couldn't help but wonder if she should tell her everything but at the same time it might help the young girl understand just what had happened.
Katherine then said "I can sit here and tell you everything about how Jon and I fell in love and how he had become your father but the only thing I have to really say is Jon has been there when Robb couldn't be, he looked after you when you were younger, taught you a lot, he loved you when Robb couldn't and if you want to hate anyone for not telling you about all of this then hate me but not Jon because he doesn't deserve your hatred, he's a good man and he loves you" she said and then gave a slight smile before putting her hand on Mia's and giving it a squeeze then standing up letting the young girl think that over.
"Goodnight Mia" Katherine said as she walked out the room.
Mia chewed on her lip and honestly she felt her anger at everyone just melt away mostly because of the fact that Katherine was right, Jon did love her. He was the man who was there when Robb hadn't been but at the same time he loved her mother more than anything. Mia could see it in the way that he was with her. She could see it in the pride that he had being with Katherine and it made her heart warm at that mostly because of the fact that he was the man who she called father. He was the man that had been there all the way through her life and she doubted that would actually change any time soon.
She sank down into her bed and laid her head on the pillow. Mia was tired of being angry at anyone and would let them know that tomorrow but right now she just wanted to get some sleep.
For the last week Mia hasn't been able to sleep that well because of the anger that she had in her at not being told about her real father but she hoped that tonight she would be able to sleep a little better. The one thing she had on her mind was how she had written to Ro and told him everything. She had told him about the fact that Jon hadn't been her real father and she got caring words back from the boy in Rohan and honestly she wondered how she had got so lucky when it came to having a friend like him even if she bosses him around more than anything and the poor boy actually chases after her.
They had been best friends for a very long time and that was one friendship she knew that wouldn't die no matter what happened in the future. They had a friendship that was unbroken. People might laugh about it but she didn't care what they thought about anything, she didn't care what they said behind their backs. What the two of them had was special and no one else could break that.
Then there was Durin who she liked to outdo all the time and never seemed to be able to no matter what but that boy was definitely another story.
Mia cuddled down under her furs and tried to get some sleep and she found herself drifting easily than she had in a long time. That she was thankful.
-.-
The next morning Mia was up early and found that the castle was definitely awake and she chewed on her lip as she moved down the stairs to find someone that she needed to talk too. She glanced in the great hall but found that she didn't actually see him so she walked along the hallway and poked her head around the door of the office and saw him sitting there with her mother and for a moment she watched him. These two weren't married but that didn't seem to matter to Katherine, she made sure that the lords accepted Jon no matter what.
Katherine was about to speak and then she glanced up to see Mia standing in the doorway. "Mia" she said and gave her a soft smile and watched as the young girls eyes went straight to Jon and she then stood up and said "I think I will go and get myself a cup of tea, Bilbo has sent some over and you know how i love his tea" she smiled softly and then walked out the office leaving both Jon and Mia.
Mia watched as the door closed and then chewed on her lip gently before looking over at Jon. "I want to apologise" she said after a moment and nodded. "My mother told me most things and I know that I have been a brat this passed week and for that I want you to forgive me" she started to play with her fingers in front of her. "But she is right, you are my father, you are the man that has always been there and if it's alright with you I would like to continue to call you my father" she said and kept her blue eyes on him.
Jon watched her for a moment and then let a smile pull at his lips. "I would like that very much" he admitted and then nodded.
She opened her mouth to say something but guessed it was probably the wrong to ask right now.
"You can ask me anything, you do know that Mia" he sat down in the seat that Katherine had departed and watched the young girl who had moved more in to the room and had taken the seat on the other side of the desk.
"What was he like? Robb... Am I like him?" she asked and chewed on her lip. It was probably the wrong thing she could ask but she wanted to know.
"You are definitely like him, you have his eyes but you are also your mother" he admitted and then leaned his arms on the desk. "I can tell you some stories about him, if you would like?" He asked even though he missed Robb terribly he still had some stories that his daughter should know.
"I'd like that very much" she admitted and smiled warmly at her father. The man that had brought her up for all of these years and she knew that that wasn't going to change at all.
