All she wanted to do was get home. But it seemed like the bus was taking forever. The sooner she got home the sooner she could get some sleep. Doing a nightshift was never pretty. In the end she would often drink copious amounts of coffee just to get her through the night.
Jeyne was often asked why she didn’t actually get someone to drive her but if she was honest, there wasn’t anyone who could do it. Not only that she might as well drive herself but that would just be putting everyone in danger especially when she was seriously exhausted.
When the bus finally got to her stop she got off and then went to get something to eat, needing something in her stomach. Because when she got back to the house she was getting straight into bed. Thankfully she had the day/night off because she was starting to run on low energy as it was.
She smiled, sleepily, at the guy behind the counter when she paid for her stuff and then left the shop. Jeyne really must’ve been exhausted because she didn’t even see him talking into an ear piece telling the people that she was on her way.
Just around the corner she finally got home and she put her hand into her bag before grabbing her keys out. The lock clicking open when she unlocked the door and moved through it, eating her apple as she did so. It wasn’t much food but it would have to tie her over until she got up later on.
Jeyne put her keys into the bowl and her bag on the banister before making her way to the kitchen but she didn’t make it because the next thing she knew there was someone putting something over her mouth and then everything went black and the last thing she was thinking was
God help me
When Jeyne started to come around she had that sick feeling in her stomach and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to throw up or not. Even if she had only eaten an apple. Then the next thing she came to realise was the fact she wasn’t alone. That there was someone standing across from her, another thing she came to realise was that she wasn’t tied to anything but her arms did feel heavy though.
That was the price she had to pay for having chloroform knock her out.
When Jeyne finally came around properly she came to see that she was in a room, one that seemed really familiar to her. She had been in one of these before and she hoped that the thoughts running through her head wasn’t actually going in the direction she was thinking because if it was then this was going to be bad.
Very, very bad.
The door opposite her opened and in stepped a blonde-ish haired man and he was dressed in a suit and carrying a folder.
This was going in the direction that she didn’t want it to and that made her feel really nervous because there was only one person who would be behind this. Only one person that would do this to her and she was now starting to feel anger flare through her because this was the last place she wanted to be but clearly that didn’t matter to these people.
When the guy got close to the table he put the folder down and looked directly at Jeyne and she could see that he had blue eyes. They were pretty but that didn’t mean she liked him any more right now. If he had been sent to get her then she was going to make sure that she caused him enough grief as she could.
And since when did these people knock out the people they wanted to talk too? Maybe it was because they knew Jeyne wouldn’t come willingly. Especially when she had left this place far behind and was happy in the real world.
“Miss Porter..” he went to start but was cut off.
“Just get on with it, I already know where I am so why don’t you get to the point?”
“And where do you think you are?” he asked and put his hands into his black trouser pockets. He watched as Jeyne raised her eyebrow. “I’m interested to see if we’re on the same page here”
“I’m in the holding cells under Thames House” she finally said and then leaned back in the chair. “And you’re not Tom Quinn” she said and raised her eyebrow.
“No, I am not” he said in an amused tone before moving a hand out of his pocket and dropping his blue eyes down to the folder that was on the table between them.
“So, where is he?” she asked and looked around the room. “Tom, I mean” she said and put her eyes back on him. “I haven’t seen him in a while”
Jeyne hadn’t actually been very happy to see that Tom wanted to keep tabs on her. She had hated it and knew it was against the rules for an officer to keep an eye on someone that has left the service but he always made sure that she was fine especially after what had happened. She swallowed at the memory of what had happened the last time she had been here.
The guy hesitated and looked in the direction of the camera that was filming everything going on in this room. Their conversation being played back to the boss. Then came the voice in his ear that told him to tell her the truth, she would find out in the end. “Tom was decommissioned” he admitted and then watched her reaction.
Jeyne sat quiet for a moment. In honesty she didn’t seem surprised that had happened to Tom. Especially with what he had been saying to her when they met up. Admitting that he didn’t trust the service anymore. So that meant that this guy was Section D leader.
“You don’t seem surprised, why is that?” he asked and kept his blue eyes on her. “Is it because you knew what was going on with him?”
Jeyne looked away and then over towards the camera and scoffed. “What is it you actually want, Harry?” she said and kept her eyes on the camera for a while before moving them and looking up at the blonde haired guy. “If you’re going to keep me here then the best you can do is give me your name” she saw that he was going to say something and then she quickly said “Your real name” she muttered and crossed her arms over her chest. “You seem to forget that I used to be just like you so don’t bother lying”
“Adam.” he said after a moment. “Adam Carter”
Jeyne pushed her eyebrows together, she had heard that name before and started to rack her brains because she was so sure that she had heard it before. Then she moved her eyes up to look at him. “I know who you are now” she said and scoffed. “You’re MI6”
Just as she said MI6, he said in unison “MI5”
“Well well, we have James Bond in the ranks” she said sarcastically before leaning forward and putting her hands on the table. “So, how is Miss Moneypenny?” she asked and raised her eyebrow.
Adam couldn’t count the amount of times he had been asked that. In honesty it was starting to get really annoying but he knew what she was doing and it wasn’t going to work on him. So he banged his fist down on the table and looked at her. “You seem to think that this is a joke, well I can tell you that it’s not”
Jeyne stood up and looked him directly in the face. “You seem to think that I want to be here, I was taken from my house after doing a night shift I might add and brought here, I wake up in the very building I promised I wouldn’t ever set foot in again and now you’re having a go at me like it’s my fault, so tell me James, why are you here instead of Harry himself?” she said angrily. “Or has he got himself in trouble and you need my help to get him out of it? Because if that is the case then he can go to hell for all I care”
Adam sighed before standing up and then looking up at the camera, he nudged his head towards the door and then suddenly it opened. He then turned back to Jeyne and said. “You want to see Harry? Well come on” he nudged his head towards the door and he started walking before looking back to see if she was following, she wasn’t. “You coming or do you want to stay in there?” he asked and raised his eyebrow at her. If she wanted to see Harry then she really was going slow about it. Probably in shock at the fact that they were actually going to see him.
Jeyne hesitated because this could either be a trap or Adam could very well be taking her to Harry. She didn’t know how long she had been out but she definitely didn’t feel tired right now, angry, hungry maybe, but not tired but her legs felt heavy and she wasn’t sure if she should actually follow him but then he looked back at her and then nudged his head towards the way that they would go to get up to Harry’s office and she found her feet moving her in the direction.
They both walked in silence until they got to the main part of this building and she felt very overwhelmed because this indeed was Thames House and she was standing back in the very building that she didn’t want to be in. Adam then took her down the corridor and behind the secret door where Section D was situated. They still had the pods then. She found a smile pulling at her lip slightly before she cleared her throat and stepped into the pod next to Adam’s.
Jeyne stepped out on the other side and saw that the room had been changed. “You redecorated” she said and looked around before looking at Adam who had a smile on his lips before she then said “I don’t like it” she didn’t even see the smile slip from his mouth because she was looking in the direction of the office that she could see through the glass and the guy that was behind his desk. Harry.
A sick feeling took over her stomach and she couldn’t decide whether she was glad that she didn’t actually have anything other than the apple or stupid for not actually having something more than the damn apple, but then again she really didn’t expect to be taken hostage by the very people that she had tried so hard to not think about. She had succeeded until this very moment.
Jeyne moved her eyes away from Harry and over to the dark haired woman that was now standing in front of both her and Adam. The woman introduced herself as Fiona Carter. Jeyne scoffed. “Mrs James Bond” she said and smiled before looking around the room once more. It might be considered rude but she was allowed to be considering that these people was holding her against her will.
Jeyne’s eyes then fell on a familiar person and she smiled and moved over to the man. “Malcolm” she said and gave him a hug. He was much older than her but that didn’t worry her because they had been a team. Although she was actually surprised to see that he was still here. But if he liked doing his job then that’s what mattered. She however liked doing her own job at the hospital.
“Jeyne, how lovely to see you” Malcolm said when they pulled away from her. To be honest he wasn’t actually that surprised that she was here. Although he could see that it definitely wasn’t by her own choice. Sometimes he wanted to blast Harry, other times he made it so hard to work with him that he had thought about quitting so many times and yet he was still here.
Jeyne gave Malcolm a soft smile before she looked over at the window of Harry’s office and saw that he was waiting for her. She then took a deep breath before she moved away from the others that had now come around her and moved towards Harry’s office. It felt like she was in trouble with the headmaster, that’s how this felt, another feeling that was running through her was that she just didn’t want to be here. That she would actually get this over and done with then get home and get some food.
She bit on her lip when she walked into Harry’s office then shut the door behind her, she needed to talk to him on her own and find out why the hell he had gone back on his deal. Why he had dragged her back in when he had promised that he would leave her alone. After Danny had died, she had been so distraught that she had to be sedated for a few days and when she got back she had told Harry that she was leaving to have a normal life and he had taken her resignation with a promise that he wouldn’t ever darken her doorstep again and now he had gone back on that promise. What could be so damn bad that he would bring her back in?
“Jeyne..” he was then cut off.
“You promised me” she said angrily and slammed her hand down on the desk. “You promised me that I wouldn’t be called back in and now look, you went back on your word!” she was so angry that he would do that to her of all people. In the beginning she and Harry had been close but then when Danny died and she had to be sedated, she bad begun to think that he was really bad for her and she needed to get away from this and that’s what she done.
Harry sighed and looked down before lifting his eyes up to her and said after a moment. “I had no choice, do you think I wanted to do this?” he said and then stood up so that she was looking at him on some sort of same level rather than down with those angry brown eyes of hers. He had needed her in and that was all there was too it.
“I got out of the way, I got free and was living a good life away from this and then James Bond informed me that I was needed back on the Grid.”
He didn’t need to look to see that she meant Adam. “You weren’t ever free” he said after a moment. Only he knew this and wasn’t going to tell her but she needed to know. “The service paid for you to go to college and then nursing school” he admitted and then watched as her face fell once more. “We needed to keep you safe and under our watch and now we needed you back on the Grid, we brought you back in”
Jeyne shook her head. “You made sure that I got everything I needed?” she bit down on her lip hard before turning away. She was never free from this place, she owed a debt, one she didn’t know about until now but she owed Harry a big debt and now he was going to call it in. She felt sick and once again felt glad that she hadn’t actually eaten anything because she was sure that she would’ve thrown it up all over the floor. “You’re a liar” she said after a moment and looked over at him. “You didn’t let me go because you knew that one day you would need me back here and now you’ve got what you want but I’m telling you now..” she said pointing a finger at him. “I’m not doing whatever it is that you actually want”
“You don’t know what it is yet..”
Jeyne scoffed, “If it’s coming from you then its definitely nothing good. But I told you I’m not doing it, I’ll make sure to pay back everything you’ve paid for but other than that we’re done. For good” she said and held her hands up before she moved backwards. She was out of this place and going home. A home she didn’t even feel safe in at all. Now she was starting to wonder if there had been people in the place to keep an eye on her. Like people she had contacted so many times when she needed information about certain things. Now she felt like she was constantly being watched or maybe she was just being paranoid.
“Jeyne..” he called to her and then sighed. “We need your help”
“No” she said angrily and looked over at him. “I told you that I didn’t want to do this anymore” she had told him so many times after what happened and nothing had changed. Jeyne still wanted out. She felt like her throat was closing over and wanted to choke her and at the same time she felt tears start to burn the back of her eyes and wanted to cry them out but at the same time she didn’t want him to see her weak. Never again. He would pull her in and trap her like he’s done to so many people before.
But even she was now starting to realise that there was no way she would be able to get out of here, there was no way that she would get out without helping him but at the same time she didn’t want to ask about it.
“I’m never going to be able to say no, am I?” she asked and kept her eyes away from him.
“No, we need your help and you know I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important. The team is on standby waiting” he said and looked out the window of his office to see the team standing there watching them. He dropped his eyes back to Jeyne. “Have you met them? They really are quite nice, but don’t tell them that I said that, I do have a rep to protect after all” he said before a smile pulled at his lips.
Jeyne stayed quiet for a moment before she looked over at the team that was on the Grid. “I’ve already met Mr and Mrs James Bond, and of course I already knew Malcolm, so who are the others?” she asked and glanced over at Harry. If she had to stay here, she might as well know who she was going to be working with, even if she was going to hate every minute of it.
“Adam and Fiona Carter, Rosalind Myers, Joanna Portman and Zafar Younis” he pointed out the new members of his team. “And of course you remember Malcolm”
“You seem to keep losing people, Harry” she said after a moment and then looked over at them all. Okay, maybe Zaf was cute, she gave a slight smile before she turned her back on them.
“Let’s get to work shall we?” Harry then grabbed a file off his desk and walked out his office, Jeyne in tow. “Meeting room” he said to the others and walked in that way.
Maybe when this was all over then she would actually get back to normal, she would be able to put all of this behind her and hopefully she would make sure that Harry knows she doesn’t want anything else from the service. That she wants to make it on her own, that she can make it on her own. She doesn’t need them paying for her to do anything else.
Jeyne took a seat at the table and looked around, this definitely hadn’t changed but the layout of everything else on the Grid had. She looked around at everyone who was at the table and gave a slight smile to each one of them before putting her attention on Harry. “So, what did I get called back in for?” she asked and raised her eyebrow.
“This” he said and slid a folder towards her.
She opened the folder and then looked through the pictures. Someone had written on Big Ben. “I find it very impressive” she said and smiled at Harry before looking down at the pictures once more.
“I’m glad to see that your humour hasn’t faded over time” he said sarcastically only to receive a glare from Jeyne.
She dropped her eyes once more and bit down on her lip. “So, what has any of this got to do with me?” she asked and raised her eyebrow before dropping the pictures on the table. “Someone writes on Big Ben and I’m brought back in? Can’t anyone around here handle it or are you really that lazy?” she asked and looked over at Harry. “Because I can honestly say, that it wasn’t me who wrote on Ben” she pulled her lip in between her teeth once more.
“Actually we thought you might be able to help us out and go undercover”
Jeyne scoffed. “Go undercover on what? Casper the friendly ghost?” She ran her hands over her face. “Look, I’ve worked a twelve hour shift and I’m tired and been in the same clothes for more than twenty-four hours and I would like to get home and sleep because I honestly think that you can handle all of this on your own” she stood up before shaking her head. “I said that I would look it over, look it over I have. Now I want to go home”
“Jeyne maybe right, Harry. There might not be anything in it other than someone wanting people to know that they got up on Big Ben and wrote on it”
“Thank you..” she said and looked over at him.
“Zaf”
She smiled before putting her eyes back on Harry. “You’ve been in this job for too long, Harry. You’re seeing things that aren’t there and right now you’re seeing things that don’t need to be seeing too”
“Did you read what it said, like properly?” Harry asked.
Jeyne nodded. “I did” she said and stood up properly and crossed her arms over her chest. She was pretty much the only one who could really backchat Harry and even then he really didn’t like it but right now she really didn’t know what this had to do with her.
“Then you’ll know that whoever this is really means business”
“Let the police deal with it, this is a matter for them and not for the Security Services”
“Smaug, Jeyne, Smaug!” he said and looked at her.
Jeyne reached over and grabbed the photograph once more before she turned and sat on the table with her back to them and bit down on her lip. She might as well give it a once over again before she finally did walk out the door. “So, who is Smaug?” she asked after a moment before standing up and looking at them once more.
“You’ve never read The Hobbit?” Zaf asked.
She shook her head “Should I have?” she asked before shrugging up a shoulder. “I didn’t know that reading the books was required when I joined up” she said with sarcasm.
“Smaug is a dragon who invaded Erebor” Zaf got a blank look from Jeyne. “You really should read the books at some point” he pointed out before smiling at her.
Jeyne was actually stumped before she shook her head and continued on. “So, what has Smaug got to do with modern day? I mean Dragons don’t exist so how is that actually going to help you figure out what is going on?”
“That’s why you’re going under-cover” Harry said with a smile. “You’re going to help us figure out what Smaug has got to do with all of this and who wrote that on Big Ben”
Jeyne was going to hate this and she knew that she wasn’t ever going to get out of this until she actually done the damn thing. “Fine, but I’m keeping my own name and job and everything about me stays, I’m not building another legend” she said and started pacing in front of the tv screen that they had in the room.
She had too many legend’s already and the last thing she wanted to do was build another one because she usually got lost in the damn things and it took her ages to get back to normality. “And..” she said before stopping and looking at them all. “Once I’ve done this that’s it” she said and kept her eyes on Harry. “No more of this, you leave me alone. You don’t ever contact me again. One job and that’s it, you wipe my name from the database and you don’t even cross my paths, not one of you” she said and looked around at each of them before putting her eyes back on Harry. “Do we have a deal?”
Harry knew that he should’ve left her alone but he had dragged her in for a reason and he knew that as soon as this was over then she would be off again. He accepted that a long time ago. “Yes, we have a deal. But you’re going to have to add some things to your back ground so you might want to tweak it a bit” he said and stood up before he nudged his head towards his office. “Adam, if I could have a word” he said and then looked back at Jeyne. “Welcome home”
“It’s only for a visit” she said after a moment before watching as the others left the room. Jeyne sat down in a chair and looked over the pictures once more. What the hell had she got herself in for? Why should she help MI5 get whoever done this? Whoever it was had a problem with someone else and she honestly didn’t think that they should get involved but of course that wasn’t going to be the case, they were going to get involved whether she liked it or not.
Who were these people and why the hell had they actually wrote on Big Ben? Was it so that they could get people’s attention? Because if that was the case then they certainly had it and maybe it was the wrong people that they had attracted.
Only time would tell on how this all plans out.
Jeyne was often asked why she didn’t actually get someone to drive her but if she was honest, there wasn’t anyone who could do it. Not only that she might as well drive herself but that would just be putting everyone in danger especially when she was seriously exhausted.
